Will Chris Evans be in Avengers: Doomsday? Marvel star discusses return rumors
Anthony Mackie, who plays Sam Wilson/Captain America in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), recently responded to reports that Chris Evans will reprise his role in Avengers: Doomsday (2026).
In an interview with Esquire, Mackie stated he was unaware of Evans’ return and had spoken to him weeks prior, during which Evans claimed to be “happily retired” from Marvel. Mackie only learned of the report when his manager informed him, and he confirmed he has not seen a script for the film.
Evans, who last appeared as Captain America in Avengers: Endgame (2019), disputed the claim in the same Esquire article, denying any involvement in Avengers: Doomsday.
The actor acknowledged that speculation about his return resurfaces every few years and reiterated that he remains retired from the MCU. However, speculation persists, as past instances have shown actors denying their involvement before ultimately appearing in Marvel projects, such as Andrew Garfield in Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021).
The upcoming Avengers: Doomsday will be directed by the Russo Brothers and will introduce Robert Downey Jr. as Doctor Doom.
Mackie is expected to feature prominently as Captain America in the new Avengers films. He expressed confidence in the Russo Brothers’ ability to craft a unique storyline, emphasizing that the films should not simply replicate Infinity War and Endgame.
Mackie also discussed his future in the role, suggesting he could portray Captain America for about a decade, including potential appearances in other Marvel projects. His next MCU appearance will be in Captain America: Brave New World, set for release on February 14, 2025.
