Oscar-nominee Karla Sofía Gascón apologizes for resurfaced posts on Islam, George Floyd, and Oscars diversity.

Gascón, who stars in Emilia Pérez, acknowledged the backlash in a statement to Variety.

“I want to acknowledge the conversation around my past social media posts that have caused hurt,” she said. “I am deeply sorry to those I have caused pain. All my life I have fought for a better world. I believe light will always triumph over darkness.”

One resurfaced 2020 tweet mocked Muslim women wearing burkas, describing the practice as “deeply disgusting of humanity.” In a 2021 post, she criticized religions, stating, “I am so sick of so much of this shit, of Islam, of Christianity, of Catholicism and of all the beliefs of morons that violate human rights.”

Another post from 2020, following George Floyd’s murder, suggested that people did not genuinely care about Floyd, referring to him as a “drug addict swindler” and criticizing both racial injustice protesters and police. Additionally, she criticized the 2021 Oscars, likening them to a “Black Lives Matter demonstration.”

Gascón made history as the first openly transgender actor nominated for an Academy Award and previously won Best Actress at Cannes. Despite her trailblazing career, the resurfaced posts have sparked controversy, raising questions about accountability in Hollywood.
