Actor Anthony Mackie has responded to criticism over his recent comments about Captain America: Brave New World, clarifying his stance after facing backlash on social media.

The controversy began on January 27, when Mackie, 46, made a statement during a press conference in Rome about his upcoming Marvel film. According to Daily Mail, the actor said, “To me, Captain America represents a lot of different things, and I don’t think the term ‘America’ should be one of those representations.” He went on to describe the character as someone who embodies “honor, dignity, and integrity,” emphasizing trustworthiness over national identity.

His remarks quickly ignited debate, with some interpreting them as dismissive of Captain America’s national identity, while others saw them as an effort to emphasize the character’s broader values. In response, Mackie took to Instagram Stories to clarify his position.

“Let me be clear about this—I’m a proud American, and taking on the shield of a hero like CAP is the honor of a lifetime,” Mackie wrote. He also expressed his deep respect for those who serve the country, adding, “CAP has universal characteristics that people all over the world can relate to.”

Mackie, who introduced Sam Wilson in Captain America: Civil War and officially became Captain America in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, will reprise his role in Brave New World. The film, which sees him replacing Chris Evans as the lead, is set for release on February 14, 2025.
