This development comes amid heightened border security measures introduced by US President Donald Trump. Fox News reported a significant reduction in the number of encounters with individuals attempting to cross the border illegally during the early days of Trump’s administration.

According to data from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), the number of encounters dropped by 35% compared to the final days of Joe Biden’s presidency, with 1,288 recorded on January 17, 1,266 on January 18, and 1,354 on January 19.

In a recent executive order, President Trump underscored the administration's commitment to enforcing immigration laws.

He stated, “Enforcing our Nation’s immigration laws is critically important to the national security and public safety of the United States. The American people deserve a Federal Government that prioritizes their safety, security, and well-being.”

The incident reflects the complexities and challenges of border management, as increased security measures aim to address both unauthorized crossings and organized criminal activities near the border.

Mexican cartels are organized criminal groups in Mexico that are heavily involved in illegal activities such as drug trafficking, arms smuggling, human trafficking, and money laundering.

These groups operate both within Mexico and internationally, with significant influence on the global drug trade, particularly in supplying narcotics like cocaine, methamphetamine, heroin, and marijuana.
