LODHRAN:

Under the auspices of the district administration, Lodhran hosted its first-ever Deputy Commissioner Chess Championship, reviving the nearly extinct game in the region after 50 years.

The championship, held at the Gymkhana, was inaugurated by Commissioner Multan Division Amir Khurram Khan and Deputy Commissioner Dr. Lubna Nazir, who made the first chess move to kick off the event.

Over 60 participants from various government and private schools, including players from the Under-15 category and students of the Tareen Education Foundation, competed across three exciting categories.

Speaking at the event, Commissioner Amir Khurram Khan emphasised the importance of promoting mental games alongside physical sports. "Chess fosters critical thinking and problem-solving. Such events will also be organized in other districts of the division," he said.

Deputy Commissioner Dr Lubna Nazir was lauded for her efforts in resurrecting chess in Lodhran, an area that once saw this game flourish but lost its prominence over the decades.

"This championship is a milestone in encouraging chess enthusiasts and nurturing talent in Lodhran," she remarked.

The winners of the championship received cash prizes and trophies.
