A tragic incident occurred at the University of Massachusetts Lowell on Friday, January 24, when a student committed suicide after jumping from the Richard P. Howe Bridge. 

The incident occurred around 10:40 a.m. on January 24, when authorities responded to a report of a person in the Merrimack River near the Richard P. Howe Bridge. Emergency crews, including the Lowell Fire Department, Lowell Police, and UMass Lowell Police, arrived at the scene but were unable to rescue the individual.

The university confirmed that the deceased was a freshman student from Lowell studying computer science. Witnesses to the event included several pedestrians, some of whom were UMass Lowell community members who regularly cross the bridge connecting North Campus, East Campus, and University Crossing.

The Lowell Police Department later informed the student's family of the tragedy. UMass Lowell expressed its condolences to the student's family and offered mental health resources for students and staff affected by the incident. The university encouraged those impacted to seek support during this difficult time.
