Netflix dominates the Oscars 2025 with 18 nominations across six titles, led by Jacques Audiard's Emilia Pérez. The daring Spanish-language musical crime drama earned a record-breaking 13 nominations, becoming the most-nominated non-English language film in Academy history.
Premiering at Cannes, Emilia Pérez received widespread acclaim, with its cast earning the prestigious Prix d'interprétation féminine as a collective. The film, set in Mexico City, explores a cartel leader’s gender transition through a bold narrative and striking musicality.
Emilia Pérez is nominated for Best Picture and Best International Feature Film, while Karla Sofía Gascón and Zoe Saldaña earned their first Oscar nominations for Best Actress in a Leading Role and Best Actress in a Supporting Role. Jacques Audiard also received nods for Best Director and Adapted Screenplay.
Despite its success, fans remain unimpressed by the movie and expressed confusion at the film being nominated for 13 categories. Reactions overwhelmingly echoed the sentiment that the film was a poor representation of the LGBTQ+ community and does not deserve to win over its other competitors in the categories.
Emilia Perez deserved no nominations.

It’s a fauxgressive vanity project by some guy who couldn’t even bother to research the Mexico or the trans experience.
if it wins, it’s a win for mediocrity and laziness.
I can’t even wrap my head around ‘Emilia Pérez’ getting THIRTEEN (13!!!) #Oscars nominations.

Quite possibly the worst movie ever (mid-scores from audiences & critics) to get double digit nominations. Baffling. pic.twitter.com/xbIwQnUgSM
“How did Emilia Pérez get so many nominations” because the Academy loves ‘well-meaning’ paternalistic issue movies that are offensive to every group of people they’re supposedly advocating for

emilia perez getting 2 nominations for original song when they sound like they were translated on google by someone who has never heard a latino song in their lives

The film also earned nods in technical categories like Cinematography, Editing, Sound, Makeup, and Hairstyling. Its music, created by Camille and Clément Ducol, received three nominations, including Original Score and Original Song for “El Mal” and “Mi Camino.”
Netflix’s other nominations include Wallace & Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl for Animated Feature, The Six Triple Eight for Original Song, and Maria for Cinematography.
The Oscars will air live on March 2, 2025, on ABC.
