Gracie Abrams and Demi Lovato have raised concerns over apparent issues with their Instagram accounts, alleging that Meta, the parent company of Instagram, is tampering with their following lists.

On Tuesday, singer Gracie Abrams took to her Instagram story to explain that her account had automatically followed the official Instagram profiles of both the U.S. President (@POTUS) and Vice President (@VP). She revealed that despite unfollowing the accounts multiple times, Meta's platform automatically followed them again. “Had to block them in order to make sure I am nowhere near that,” Abrams wrote. She encouraged her followers to check their own accounts in case they were experiencing similar issues.

Demi Lovato echoed these concerns on social media, sharing a screenshot of her Instagram interface and revealing that she had unfollowed a specific profile twice, but it kept reappearing. “Shady f–king business meta,” Lovato wrote, expressing frustration over the repeated issue.

Meta's Communication Director, Andy Stone, responded to the allegations via Twitter, clarifying that users should not automatically follow official government accounts. He explained that the accounts of the President, Vice President, and First Lady are managed by the White House and that as part of the transition between administrations, the content on these accounts can change. Stone suggested that users may experience delays in their follow and unfollow requests while these adjustments are made.

Despite these clarifications by Stone, many Instagram users shared the same experience of their following lists being tampered with, and the accounts of POTUS Donald Trump and VP JD Vance automatically followed.

'Same thing happened to me, but I just blocked them immediately,' one user wrote, while another claimed this happened across both major Meta platforms, 'Happened to me too, on both IG and FB.'
