CCTV cameras at police stations to keep watch on cops
Sindh Inspector General of Police Ghulam Nabi Memon has ordered the installation of closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras at all police stations across Sindh, including Karachi.
The initiative is part of endevours to curb unlawful activities like illegal detention, torture, bribery, extortion and sheltering criminals at police stations. The security cameras will keep an eye on the cops, forcing them to take their 'businesses' outside the police station.
The cameras will be placed at the main gate, premises, and offices of the SHO, head inspector, duty officer, reporting centre, and lockup.
A letter issued by Assistant Inspector General Police Azhar Khan to district SSPs of Karachi, Hyderabad, Mirpur Khas, Shaheed Benazirabad, Sukkur, and Larkana, outlined the requirements for the installation.
The SSPs have been directed to review the functioning of the CCTV cameras installed at the police station level and ensure that cameras are installed at gates, SHO rooms, head muharrir rooms, duty officer rooms, reporting centres, and lockups.
The district SSPs must also ensure that the camera recordings are secure. They have been mandated to submit a report, signed and confirming the installation and functioning of CCTV cameras in their respective police stations, to the IG Operation at the Central Police Office by Monday morning.
