KARACHI:

Founder of Pakistan martial arts, 77-year-old Ashraf Tai, is in critical condition. He suffered a heart attack and is currently undergoing treatment at National Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases (NICVD). Pakistan's martial arts pioneer has narrowly escaped death for the second time after a harrowing stay in the intensive care ward.

With thousands of students worldwide, Grandmaster Tai has faced a life-threatening ordeal in 2013 as well. Both of his kidneys have already failed.

NICVD Head Dr Tahir Sagheer said that Ashraf Tai's condition is now out of danger and he is now in the Special Care Unit. After a test, an important decision, regarding Ashraf Tai's operation, will be taken on Monday.

Notably, Ashraf Tai has been awarded Pride of Performance by Government of Pakistan for his valuable services in martial arts in the country. Ashraf Tai, who migrated to Pakistan from Myanmar (then Burma) in 1970, gained national fame after an incident in a local cinema. Tai single-handedly beat up a 14-member gang of thugs that sold tickets in black. Later, Ashraf Tai started providing training at a small centre in Hill Park. After the fame of Bruce Lee's action films, Ashraf Tai also became famous overnight in Pakistan.

Ashraf Tai's wife Syeda Samina Shah has requested the federal and provincial governments to help and support her husband who is facing various problems.
