KARACHI:

The National Trade Union Federation Pakistan (NTUF) and the Home-Based Women Workers Federation Pakistan (HBWWF) organised a joint rally from Regal Chowk to the Karachi Press Club.

The rally protested against nonpayment of the official minimum wages, the contract labour system, privatization of institutions, and anti-labor and anti-environment policies.

The rally in particular demanded international brands to force their local manufacturers to follow the labour laws as well as the European Parliament regulations regarding workplace safety and workers' welfare.

NTUF Deputy General Secretary Nasir Mansoor criticised government efforts to legalise the exploitative third-party contract system, violating international labour conventions.

HBWWF Secretary General Zehra Khan condemned the Sindh Labour Ministry for failing to enforce minimum wage laws, leaving 90% of workers underpaid.

HRCP member Qazi Khizar highlighted exploitation by international brands and financial institutions.
