Manchester United suffered a humiliating 3-1 defeat at home to Brighton & Hove Albion on Sunday, further compounding their miserable Premier League season. The match was marred by a series of defensive errors, with goalkeeper Andre Onana’s costly blunder adding to United’s woes.
Brighton’s Yankuba Minteh played a pivotal role, scoring once and assisting on another, while Kaoru Mitoma and Georginio Rutter also found the net in the second half for the visitors.
United started the match poorly, conceding just five minutes in. A long ball from Carlos Baleba caught United’s defense off guard, with Karou Mitoma's swift run setting up Minteh for the opening goal.
Bruno Fernandes equalized from the penalty spot after a VAR review, which deemed Jan Paul van Hecke’s foul on Diogo Dalot worthy of a spot-kick.
However, Brighton regained the lead in the second half, with Mitoma tapping in Minteh's cross to make it 2-1.
The game was sealed by a disastrous error from Onana, who failed to gather a simple low cross into the box, allowing Rutter to score into an empty net.
The defeat marks United’s 10th Premier League loss of the season, with their woeful form continuing as they remain 13th in the table.
Brighton, on the other hand, climbed to ninth place, just four points off the top four. The defeat left Old Trafford in a sour mood, with fans booing the team off the pitch.
United’s struggles against Brighton, having now lost six of their last seven meetings with the south coast club, continue to raise concerns about their direction this season.
The performance was a far cry from the club's legendary teams of the past, with supporters voicing their frustration after another disappointing outing.
The game also served as a somber occasion, with United paying tribute to their late former centre-forward Denis Law, who passed away on Friday at the age of 84.
However, this current United side, bereft of quality and confidence, could hardly be further removed from the vintage teams Law once graced.
