RAWALPINDI:

Residents of Union Council (UC) 46 have been deprived of clean drinking water after the Islamabad Electric Supply Company (IESCO) disconnected and removed the meter of a water filtration plant due to non-payment of dues.

The Water and Sanitation Agency (Wasa) has faced default on electricity bills. After the meter removal, the new neighbourhood of Union Council (UC) 46 has been deprived of clean drinking water.

Deploring the inconvenience, residents Haji Sarfraz, Iftikharuddin and Fauzia Bibi said that IESCO had removed the electricity meter of the filtration plant due to Wasa's default and locals had been unable to get drinking water for the past week. They recalled that before the installation of a water filtration plant, locals used to fetch water from the old supply line, boil and filter it with a cloth at home and drink it. Residents said now the filtration plant was not operative, leaving thousands of households in a state of disarray. WASA, they added, has increased water bills by 100% in one year but is still not paying electricity bills, which is cruelty.

Residents asked WASA to pay the electricity bill or make a promise to pay the bill at the earliest, replace filters and restore the water supply, otherwise, a protest would be held at the office of the WASA managing director.
