Kat Dennings recalls casting directors calling her ‘fat’ and ‘not pretty’ at 12
In an exclusive interview with PEOPLE, actress Kat Dennings revealed the harsh critiques she faced early in her career. The Shifting Gears star recalled auditioning at just 12 years old and receiving cruel feedback from casting directors.
"They thought you weren’t pretty enough and you’re fat," Dennings shared, recalling the shocking comments she received from industry professionals.
Despite these discouraging remarks, Dennings developed a resilient mindset. "For some reason, it didn't break my spirit. I was like, 'I'll show them,'" she said. Her supportive parents also helped her handle the negative feedback, urging her to ignore the harsh judgments.
The 38-year-old actress reflected on the challenging environment of Hollywood during her youth. "It was a very different environment," she explained, noting the lack of inclusivity and the "extremely negative feedback" actors received. However, she believes the industry has since become "much softer, kinder," with greater focus on body positivity and representation.
Through years of perseverance, Dennings has proven her critics wrong, achieving success in the entertainment industry. Today, she stars alongside Tim Allen in the new ABC sitcom Shifting Gears, where she portrays Riley, the estranged daughter of Matt (Allen), a widowed classic car restoration shop owner. The show airs Wednesdays on ABC.
