Nintendo unveils first look at the Switch 2: Everything we know about the new console
Nintendo has revealed the first images of the Nintendo Switch 2 in a video posted on YouTube. The long-awaited successor to the hugely popular Nintendo Switch will be called the Switch 2, and, as the name suggests, it retains the same modular design philosophy.
The video showcases several key changes and upgrades. First, the Switch 2 is larger than its predecessor, featuring a bigger display, though it still has a noticeable bezel around the screen.
The Joy-Con controllers have also been significantly redesigned. They are larger, more rounded, and attach magnetically to the sides of the tablet, in response to the larger screen.
Visually, the Switch 2 adopts a more subdued, less colorful aesthetic. The console is primarily black, with accent colors around the controller sticks and at the top of the Joy-Cons.
Like the original, the Switch 2 will support TV play via docking, allowing players to detach the Joy-Cons and use them as separate controllers or attach them to a dedicated grip.
For handheld play, the redesigned kickstand at the back of the device is sturdier, offering more stability. The Switch 2 also introduces a new USB-C port at the top, improving convenience for charging while playing.
Notably, the Switch 2 will support games from the original Switch, including physical cartridges. Digital games from the first Switch will also be compatible.
While the video highlights a new Mario Kart game—likely an upgraded version of Mario Kart 8 Deluxe—details on specific titles remain scarce.
Internally, the Switch 2 is expected to feature more powerful hardware, enabling it to run more demanding games, though specifics are still unclear.
Pricing and release details have yet to be announced, but Nintendo plans to reveal more in an upcoming Nintendo Direct on April 2nd, 2025. For now, fans will have to wait several more months for further information.
