Government to reduce tariffs for charging electric vehicles by 45%
The federal government has announced a significant step to promote the transition from fuel-powered vehicles to electric alternatives.
In a press conference, Federal Minister for Energy Sardar Awais Ahmad Khan Leghari revealed a series of measures aimed at making electric vehicles more affordable for the public, Express News reported.
To support the move, the government plans to reduce electricity tariffs for charging stations by 45% to encourage the growth of electric vehicles.
As a result, electric motorcycles could lead to savings of up to 77%, Leghari said.
The minister further explained that electric vehicle permits will now be granted through an online portal within 15 days, eliminating the need for direct interaction with officials.
He also shared that electricity tariffs would decrease from Rs71 to Rs39 per unit, benefiting electric vehicle owners.
Leghari highlighted the importance of the decision, noting that Pakistan imports $6 billion in fuel annually for motorcycles and three-wheelers.
This shift is expected to reduce the financial burden while promoting environmental sustainability.
In another development, the government plans to simplify business operations for industrial estates by creating a "one-window operation" for all electricity-related services, from billing to new connections.
Leghari described the move as a "revolutionary step" aimed at improving governance and facilitating the business community.
The minister also mentioned that the government is working to make electricity cheaper for the general public, with plans to bring Pakistan's electricity prices in line with the region's lowest rates in the coming months.
