FAISALABAD:

Deputy Commissioner Capt (retd) Nadeem Nasir announced on Monday that eight iconic bazaars in the city would be transformed into vehicle-free zones as part of a comprehensive plan to enhance the beauty of the downtown area and resolve persistent traffic issues.

Addressing a press conference, the deputy commissioner highlighted the historical and aesthetic significance of these bazaars, emphasising their modernization to meet international standards.

"The transformation will improve public accessibility, address traffic congestion, and eliminate encroachments, making the area more pedestrian-friendly," he stated.

To facilitate the public, alternative parking arrangements will be made, with upgraded infrastructure and new parking plazas constructed under public-private partnerships or as part of the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) project.

Smooth access for traders and shoppers to parking sites will be ensured, he added.

Encroachments, a long-standing issue in the city, will be tackled effectively by dedicating these markets exclusively to pedestrians. Nasir revealed that special vending zones with designated carts will be established to support street vendors.

Additional measures include reduced parking fees for traders and workers and entry-exit permits for customers with special needs.

"This project will serve as a model for upgrading other markets across the city, boosting urban mobility and economic activity," the Deputy Commissioner said.

The district administration has taken all political and business stakeholders on board to ensure the project's success, expressing confidence in its potential to revitalise Faisalabad's downtown area.
