Karak road tragedy claims 12 lives

After a catastrophic brake failure, a trailer on Saturday ran over a number of vehicles including a bus in Karak district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (K-P), killing at least twelve people.

According to Karak's deputy commissioner, the incident took place at Indus Highway near the Ambiri Kallay chowk. "The incident was caused by a failure of the trailer's brakes. The truck after getting out of control hit a number of vehicles on the highway," he said.

Police feared that the number of casualties was likely to rise. The rescue and relief operation on the highways was underway and relief workers were still busy extricating the injured and the dead from the bus. They said thirteen people had sustained injuries in the tragedy.

K-P Governor Faisal Karim Kundi took notice of the traffic accident and sought detailed information. The governor directed the health department to provide all possible assistance to the injured.

Kundi also instructed Red Crescent teams to carry out relief activities and urged the PPP workers to participate in the relief efforts in Ambiri Kallay and donate blood.

According to reports, Samiullah, the trailer driver from Lakki Marwat district, has been arrested in an injured condition. The injured driver is currently under treatment at the hospital. The main highway has been reopened to restore traffic flow.
