Steve Smith’s explosive knock of 121* off 64 balls, equalling the record for most BBL centuries, guided Sydney Sixers to a dominant 14-run victory over Perth Scorchers.
Smith’s century was his third in his last seven BBL innings, helping the Sixers post a formidable total of 220/3 on a flat pitch at the SCG.
Smith’s innings included 10 fours and seven sixes, although his early scoring was slow, managing less than a run per ball in the powerplay.
He was joined by Moises Henriques, who injected momentum into the Sixers’ innings with a quick-fire 46 off 28 balls.
The pair added 113 runs for the third wicket in just 57 balls.
After reaching 50 off 36 balls, including a reprieve from Cooper Connolly on 31, Smith accelerated, scoring his second 50 off just 22 balls. His blistering finish, which included three sixes off the final over, saw him walk off unbeaten to a standing ovation.
Ben Dwarshius also contributed 23* off 7 balls as the Sixers added 60 runs in the final three overs, taking their total well past 200. The Scorchers' chase never fully gained momentum, despite a late fightback from captain Ashton Turner, who scored 66* off 32 balls.
Turner received support from Matthew Spoors as they put on 66 runs for the seventh wicket. However, despite their efforts, the Scorchers fell short, finishing at 206/7. Sean Abbott was the standout bowler for the Sixers, taking 4/43.
