Hrithik Roshan looks back at 'Kaho Na... Pyaar Hai'
Hrithik Roshan's debut film Kaho Naa... Pyaar Hai hit the big screen a quarter of a century ago – and to celebrate that milestone, the offering is being rereleased in Indian cinemas, reported The Indian Express. However, as seen in a recent interview doing the rounds on social media, Roshan is apprehensive about how a modern audience will receive his dated blockbuster.
"I am so afraid that this film is releasing again," confessed Roshan. "People will [see it in the cinema] after 25 years and be like, 'What were we thinking?' Things aren't like this at all"
Marketed as a musical romantic thriller, Kaho Naa... Pyaar Hai starred a relatively unknown (at the time) Roshan opposite Ameesha Patel, with Roshan's filmmaker and actor father Rakesh Roshan helming the direction. The film's plot involves Roshan playing a double role of Ameesha's character Sonia's beaux Rohit (who perishes) and Rohit's doppelganger Raj – who, of course, falls in love with Sonia. Instantly propelling Roshan to superstardom, Kaho Naa ... Pyaar Hai was the first chance audiences had to appreciate Roshan's chiselled looks and impeccable dance moves, paving the way for his meteoric rise in Bollywood.
Looking back on his debut role, Roshan recalled his attempts to get to grips with the guitar for the song Pyar Ki Kashti Mein, performed by his character Raj.
"I couldn't sleep that night. The whole night I kept trying to make a physical action with my fingers matching the sound of the instrument in the song," recalled Roshan. "My fingers were matching the tune of the song. I went absolutely nuts. And then, (I thought) I nailed it, that I got it absolutely right."
Roshan, it transpired, had not nailed it at all, a fact that has now been brought to his attention by his guitar-playing sons. "Today my sons play the guitar and they look at that (Pyar Ki Kashti Mein) and say, 'Dad you just couldn't do it' because I obviously was play-acting," said Roshan. "But at that time, at least my fingers are moving with the sound. But they were all the wrong notes. So yeah, apparently, I did not nail it."
Despite having his guitar play-acting ridiculed by his sons, Roshan received several awards for his debut role. A far cry from his debut romantic hero role, Roshan was most recently seen in Fighter, a film that drew a mixed response on this side of the border.
