Man uses ChatGPT to plan Cybertruck explosion outside Trump hotel in Las Vegas, police reveal

Matthew Livelsberger used ChatGPT to gather explosive information, leading to a Cybertruck explosion.

Matthew Livelsberger, a former Army Green Beret, used ChatGPT to plan an explosion involving a Tesla Cybertruck, Las Vegas police revealed Tuesday. The incident occurred on New Year’s Day outside the Trump International Hotel in Las Vegas, leaving seven people with minor injuries but causing no significant damage to the property.

Investigators discovered that Livelsberger, 37, utilized generative AI, including ChatGPT, to search for information about explosive targets, ammunition velocity, and the legality of fireworks in Arizona. This marks the first known case in the U.S. where ChatGPT was used to assist in planning a destructive act.

During a press briefing, Sheriff Kevin McMahill called the situation a "concerning moment," emphasizing the challenges posed by generative AI in law enforcement. "This is a game-changer," McMahill noted. Authorities also detailed Livelsberger’s actions leading up to the explosion, including fueling the Cybertruck with racing-grade fuel that leaked during the drive. The vehicle contained 60 pounds of pyrotechnic materials, and investigators suspect the firearm flash from Livelsberger’s self-inflicted gunshot may have triggered the blast.

Livelsberger left behind notes describing his actions as a “wake-up call” for America’s challenges. His writings touched on societal and political grievances, including the war in Ukraine and the nation's perceived decline. Despite the location, officials said Livelsberger harbored no animosity toward President-elect Donald Trump. In fact, he urged national unity under Trump and Tesla CEO Elon Musk.

The Colorado Springs resident also expressed deep emotional struggles related to his military service, mentioning the burden of lives lost and taken.

Authorities believe Livelsberger acted alone and continue to investigate the role generative AI played in this incident.
