Cybersecurity expert Amit Yoran, 54, known for his contributions to the field and his work with the Homeland Security Department, passed away following a battle with cancer, his company announced Saturday.
Yoran, described as a “visionary,” had taken a leave of absence in December and died on Friday, according to a statement from Tenable Holdings, where he served as CEO.
“Under his leadership, Tenable achieved significant milestones, and he inspired each one of us with his dedication, passion, and commitment to make a difference,” Brigett Paradise, Tenable’s Chief People Officer, stated. “Amit leaves behind an incredible legacy as a visionary, leader, colleague, mentor, brother, father, and friend.”
The statement also acknowledged the emotional impact of his passing, adding, “We understand that this news may come as a shock and we encourage you to take the time you need to process this difficult loss.”
CNN reported that Yoran began his medical leave from Tenable Holdings on December 5.
Since becoming CEO of Tenable Holdings in 2016, Yoran led the company through significant achievements, including taking it public in 2018.
In 2003, Yoran served as the leader of the Homeland Security Department’s National Cyber Security Division, resigning from the position after a year, according to CNN.
A graduate of the United States Military Academy, Yoran frequently appeared on cable news to discuss cybersecurity. In March 2023, he provided commentary on CNN regarding the U.S. government’s decision to ban TikTok.
“He touched the lives of so many within and beyond our company and he will be missed,” the statement from Tenable noted, encouraging others to honor Yoran’s memory and the impact he had.
Tenable Holdings specializes in providing cybersecurity consulting and services to private businesses.
