Visitors to the Lahore Zoo were met with an unwelcome surprise on New Year's Day as a new entry fee structure sparked widespread protests.
The private company now managing the zoo, under a Rs500-million contract, introduced an additional charge, raising the entry fee to Rs300.
Families from various cities visiting the zoo expressed outrage over the increased fees, with many deciding to leave in protest.
The company managing the zoo took over operations, including entry tickets and parking, on January 1.
While the official zoo entry ticket remains at Rs100, visitors were also charged Rs200 for access to the snake house, leading to heated arguments with the administration.
Visitors criticised the bundling of tickets, arguing that those uninterested in visiting the snake house should not be forced to pay for it. "Charging Rs300 for entry is excessive and unfair," said one visitor.
"People who do not wish to see the snake house should have the choice to opt out."
After protests and media coverage, the private company revised its policy, allowing separate tickets for the snake house. Visitors welcomed the change, stating that if someone wanted to see the snake house, they can now buy a ticket separately.
The zoo administration announced plans to introduce new facilities in the coming days, each with separate ticket prices.
The move to privatise and modernize zoo operations has sparked debate among citizens about accessibility and affordability for families.
