KARACHI:

Several people were injured by stray bullets as Karachiites welcomed the New Year with a mix of celebrations and chaos, as the metropolitan city reverberated with gunfire in defiance of a ban on aerial firing.

At least 29 people were injured by stray bullets as revelers welcomed the New Year by celebratory aerial firing. Police rounded up at least 36 revelers for aerial firing and creating commotion on New Year's Eve in different neighbourhoods of the metropolis on Wednesday. Firearms used in celebratory firing were also taken into custody from the arrested revelers.

The injuries occurred across various areas of the metropolis. The first wave of incidents saw 26 people injured late at night, with three more individuals, including a woman.

Revelers gathered at popular spots like Sea View, where youth danced to traditional Bhangra music and exchanged greetings. However, the festivities were overshadowed by incidents of reckless aerial firing that left many injured.

Hospitals across the metropolis were overwhelmed with victims of stray bullets, with reports of injuries continuing late into the night.
