The Rawalpindi district has successfully remained polio-free in 2024. Preparations are now underway to launch comprehensive anti-polio, anti-measles and pneumonia campaigns in the new year, starting from today.
Out of five environmental samples taken to search for the polio virus from Rawalpindi city, four came back negative while one came back positive. These results led to the decision to send five more environmental samples for laboratory testing.
District Health Authority (DHA) CEO Dr Asif Arbab Niazi stated that an environmental sample of polio has come back positive from the Dhok Dalal area and as a result, the focus will be on administering polio drops to children in this area during the upcoming anti-polio campaign scheduled for the last week of January or the first week of February.
In addition to the polio campaign, the health authority is also planning to vaccinate children aged one to five years against measles and pneumonia in 2025. Measles and pneumonia counters will be set up in government hospitals, and a booster dose of the vaccine will be administered to children who did not receive vaccination between nine months and fifteen months.
The CEO also reported two cases of measles in four union councils (UCs) of Rawalpindi.
