Jason Momoa is officially shifting roles within the DC Universe after portraying the beloved Aquaman for eight years.
On Monday, the 45-year-old actor announced on Instagram that he is stepping away from superhero roles to take on the villainous character Lobo in the upcoming Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow.
In 2023, fans speculated that the Hawaiian actor might take on the role. At the time, Momoa stated he hadn’t been approached to play Lobo but was enthusiastic about the possibility.
"Lobo was always my favorite. If they call me and ask me to play it? It’s a f**k yeah," he told Fandango. "But I haven’t received that call. So, I don’t want to put any fake news out there."
Now, in a moment of closure, Momoa reshared the 2023 quote on Instagram with the caption, "They called."
He is set to star alongside Milly Alcock, who will play the titular role in the film. Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow is scheduled for release on June 26, 2026.
James Gunn, Superman director and DC CEO, congratulated Momoa in the comments, writing, "Welcome, my friend," as the actor returns to the DC franchise.
Lobo, whose name translates to "Wolf" in Spanish, made his first appearance in Omega Men #3 in June 1983. The character was created by Roger Slifer and Keith Giffen.
According to a fan description, Lobo is "an intergalactic bounty hunter, the last Czarnian. Known for his colorful speech and rapid regeneration, he has been a nuisance more than a threat."
The announcement marks a significant transition for Momoa, who previously led the Aquaman films in the DC Universe.
The Aquaman series is believed to have concluded with the release of Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom in 2023. Momoa also suggested that the future of the franchise is uncertain, saying, "It's not looking too good."
"I love this character and [I would want to] play it for a long time," he told ET in December 2023.
While he remains open to reprising his role as Aquaman, Momoa hinted at pursuing other opportunities within the DC Universe, saying, "Right now, I’m like, 'It's not looking too good.'"
The actor had previously expressed an interest in exploring different roles within the DCU, a desire now becoming a reality.
