Asha Bhosle woos crowd with 'Tauba Tauba' at 91

Legendary Indian singer's performance goes viral

Age is but a number, as 91-year-old legendary Indian singer Asha Bhosle proved in spades when she fired up the crowd in Dubai with her rendition of Karan Aujla's Tauba Tauba over the weekend. Performing alongside celebrated musician Sonu Nigam, Bhosle, draped in a white sari, not only nailed the vocals but also pulled off the signature dance moves associated with the Bollywood hit, hammering home her status as India's queen of music.

Written by Aujla, Tauba Tauba is a staple feature of the Bollywood film Bad Newz, starring Vicky Kaushal. As well as eliciting uproarious applause from the audience, the video has also gone viral, with fans and fellow artists across social media celebrating Bhosle's free spirit.

Taking to his Instagram Stories, Aujla was amongst those who singled out Bhosle's performance, writing, "The living goddess of music just performed Tauba Tauba… a song written by a kid that grew up in a small village, with no music background and no knowledge of musical instruments. A melody made by someone who doesn't play any instrument."

Moved by the legendary nonagenarian's take on his work, Aujla added, "This song has received a lot of love and recognition amongst not only fans but also music artists. This moment is truly iconic and one I will never forget. I am truly blessed and thankful. This has really inspired me to keep giving you all such melodies and create more memories together."

Aujla also shared a reel of Bhosle performing Tauba Tauba on stage and captioned, "I wrote it at 27. She sang it at 91 better than me."

Sister of the late and equally legendary playback singer Lata Mangeshkar, Bhosle has been credited for her versatility and described as one of the most influential figures of Indian cinema in a career spanning over eight decades where she recorded songs for films and albums. Her voice has become synonymous as a symbol of Indian film music, with fans spurring her latest performance to viral status.

"Asha Bhosle not only singing Tauba Tauba but also doing the dance steps at her Dubai show was not on my 2024 bingo card! Legendary!" penned radio presenter Anusha Arora over a reel of Bhosle singing and dancing, a post that has racked up over 28,000 likes in less than a day.
