Luigi Mangione allowed MP3 player for entertainment in NYC jail amid notorious "horrible conditions"
Luigi Mangione, accused of the high-profile murder of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, is currently detained in the Metropolitan Detention Center (MDC) Brooklyn, famous for its harsh conditions. TMZ's sources close to the situation have provided a glimpse into Mangione's life behind bars.
Mangione is housed in "administrative segregation," a unit designated for inmates requiring extra security measures. This status is due to the high-profile nature of his alleged crime, which makes him a potential target among the general inmate population.
Sources confirm that Mangione is confined to a single cell but has proximity to other inmates, allowing for occasional conversation. Unlike general population units, this segregation block lacks television access, leaving inmates with limited activities.
Mangione is allowed one hour per day in a recreational pen to exercise uncuffed. The pen sometimes includes a basketball or stationary bike, depending on the designated cage.
For entertainment, Mangione has the option to purchase an MP3 player and music through the commissary. However, this depends on someone depositing funds into his account. Inmates at MDC Brooklyn have a spending limit of $350 per month, with an additional $100 allowed during the holidays.
The former Pennsylvania fugitive was extradited to New York City earlier this month to face state and federal murder charges. Currently, Mangione is awaiting trial while continuing to meet with his attorneys under MDC’s security guidelines.
