Court orders implementation of school bus policy
The Lahore High Court (LHC) on Friday ruled that the registration of new schools in Punjab is contingent upon implementing a mandatory school bus policy.
The court directed the relevant authorities to submit a comprehensive report by December 30, emphasising the need for action to address smog-related concerns.
Justice Shahid Karim issued the directive while hearing petitions filed by Haroon Farooq and others, challenging the lack of effective measures to combat smog. The court stated that no new school would be allowed to register without adopting the school bus policy, which aims to reduce vehicular emissions by mandating bus services.
The court also reprimanded the secretary of schools for failing to comply with a prior order requiring schools to arrange bus services for at least 50% of students, deeming the non-compliance a violation of court orders.
During the session, a representative from the Judicial Water and Environment Commission informed the court about delays in the installation of water meters due to financial disputes between WASA and a Chinese contractor.
