At least 38 more Palestinians, including five journalists, have been killed in Gaza in the past 24 hours, bringing the overall death toll in the region to 45,399 since October last year, according to Gaza’s Ministry of Health.
More than 107,000 people have been wounded in the ongoing conflict, Al-Jazeera reported. The attack on Thursday morning targeted a broadcast van near al-Awda Hospital in the Nuseirat refugee camp in central Gaza, killing five journalists from the al-Quds Today TV channel.
The victims were identified as Fadi Hassouna, Ibrahim al-Sheikh Ali, Mohammed al-Ladah, Faisal Abu al-Qumsan, and Ayman al-Jadi. Al-Jadi, who was waiting outside the hospital for his wife to give birth to their first child, was among those killed.
Civil defence teams later retrieved the bodies and extinguished a fire at the scene. The Israeli military claimed responsibility for the targeted strike, alleging the media vehicle was carrying members of the Palestinian group Islamic Jihad. However, Israel provided no evidence to support its claim.
The attack has drawn condemnation from press freedom organisations, with Gaza now being rated as the most dangerous place in the world for journalists. Israel has restricted access to foreign journalists, allowing only those embedded with the military into the besieged enclave.
