Foreign trade: Japan seeking investment opportunities in Pakistan
About 25 Japanese businessmen are expected to attend Expo Pakistan next month.
ISLAMABAD:
Japan is seeking new trade and investment opportunities in Pakistan, a representative of the Japanese Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) said on Tuesday.
METI Asia and Pacific Division Section Head Daisuke Tsukao, who is currently on a visit to Karachi to explore trade and investment opportunities, held a meeting with Trade Development Authority of Pakistan (TDAP) Secretary Javed Anwar, according to a statement released by TDAP.
The statement said that Anwar briefed Tsukao about the government’s initiatives to create an enabling environment for foreign trade and investment cooperation between Japan and Pakistan.
Anwar told the visiting Japanese official that TDAP would name Japan as the “focus country” for 2012 and enhance marketing and commercial activities to improve the level of bilateral trade.
Wakana Kanikawa, who is an official of the Japanese Foreign Ministry, said that the visit was a prelude to the Pakistan-Japan joint economic dialogue which is scheduled to be held in March next year in Tokyo. She added that the visit was to explore investment opportunities for Japanese investors in Pakistan.
The Japanese delegation appreciated the positive outcome of the July visit of TDAP Chief Executive Tariq Puri to Japan. Anwar also briefed the visiting Japanese officials about investment potential in the agriculture sector, especially in rice, dates, fruit juices, seafood and metals.
Anwar sought Japanese assistance in establishing effective supply chain to overcome harvest losses. He invited Japanese investors to set up VHT processing plant under public-private partnership for the export of mangoes to Japan.
Kanikawa said that the Japanese government planned to hold an investment seminar in Bangkok in August 2012 to persuade Japanese investors to invest in Pakistan, adding that investment promotion missions would also be sent to Pakistan.
The TDAP secretary said that about 25 Japanese businessmen were expected to attend Expo Pakistan, which would be held from October 20 to 23 at Karachi Expo Centre.
