Denzel Washington, celebrated for his roles in films like ‘Training Day’ and ‘Gladiator II,’ recently took a significant step in his faith journey. On Saturday, the 69-year-old actor was baptized at Kelly Temple in New York City and received his minister’s license. Addressing the congregation before being immersed in water, Washington shared his spiritual reflections, saying, “It took a while, but I’m finally here. If [God] can do this for me, there’s nothing He can’t do for you.” Archbishop Christopher Bryant presided over the ceremony.

Adding an emotional layer to the event, Pauletta Washington, his wife of 41 years, expressed pride in her husband’s renewed commitment to his faith. “You are the head of our house and have set a great example for our children,” she said, referencing their four adult children. Washington, visibly moved, wiped away tears as Pauletta highlighted their enduring partnership and shared values.

This milestone in Washington’s spiritual journey comes as he continues to openly discuss his faith, contrasting it with the culture of Hollywood. In a recent interview with Esquire, he described religion as “unfashionable” in the entertainment industry but emphasized its central role in his life. “When you see me, you see the best I could do with what I’ve been given by my lord and savior. I’m unafraid. I’m free now,” he said.

Reflecting on Hollywood’s diversity of beliefs, Washington dismissed the idea of it being a unified community, stating, “There’s no such thing as Hollywood. It’s not like we all meet somewhere and discuss what we believe.” His comments highlight the personal and often solitary nature of faith within an industry known for its secular image.
