‘Sonic the Hedgehog 4’ confirmed for 2027 release, building on franchise success

Paramount announces 'Sonic the Hedgehog 4' for spring 2027 as 'Sonic 3' dominates box office and wins fans.

Paramount Pictures has officially greenlit Sonic the Hedgehog 4, targeting a spring 2027 release date. The announcement comes as Sonic the Hedgehog 3 speeds into theaters this Friday, already projected to lead the box office with an impressive $55 million to $60 million opening weekend.

Critics are praising the latest installment, awarding it an 87% fresh score on Rotten Tomatoes. Sonic 3 also boasts a star-studded cast, including Jim Carrey reprising his role as Dr. Ivo Robotnik and introducing Gerald Robotnik, Sonic’s main adversary's grandfather. Ben Schwartz returns as the voice of Sonic, joined by Keanu Reeves as Shadow the Hedgehog, a beloved character from the video game series.

The Sonic the Hedgehog franchise, based on Sega’s iconic 1991 video game, has become a global success, earning $725.2 million at the global box office from its first two films. Additionally, the series has generated over $180 million in home entertainment sales and inspired a popular Knuckles spinoff series on Paramount+ earlier this year.

Directed by Jeff Fowler, who helmed all three previous installments, Sonic 3 is expected to capitalize on holiday season momentum as it debuts in 52 international markets on Christmas. With such strong fan and critical support, Paramount is doubling down on the franchise's future with the highly anticipated Sonic the Hedgehog 4.

Plot details for the fourth installment remain under wraps, but fans can expect more thrilling adventures with Sonic and his friends as the franchise races ahead.
