Thatta markets shuttered to protest canal plans
In response to a call by Sindh Taraqi-Pasand Party (STP) chairman Dr Qadir Magsi, a complete shutter-down strike was observed in Thatta today against the federal government's decision to build more canals on the Indus River.
All business centres, shops and petrol pumps remained closed during the strike.
Party leaders Natho Khan Brohi and others expressed strong reservations, stating that Sindh was already deprived of its fair share of water.
They warned that further canals would turn the province into a barren land.
"It is sheer folly to spend billions of rupees on such disputed projects that will only exacerbate water shortages for the people of Sindh," the leaders stated.
They demanded that the federal government should immediately abandon the plan and ensure Sindh receives its rightful share of water resources.
