Courteney Cox is officially returning to the Scream franchise, reprising her iconic role as journalist Gale Weathers in Scream 7.

The announcement comes after months of speculation, with Cox previously stating she was not yet signed on for the project.

The upcoming film will mark a milestone for the franchise, as Scream creator Kevin Williamson steps into the director’s chair for the first time. Williamson, who wrote the original 1996 film, has Cox’s full support. “You can’t get better than that choice,” Cox shared in September, expressing excitement about Williamson's involvement.

The film has faced numerous delays, including the departure of Scream VI director Christopher Landon, cast changes, and setbacks from the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes. Jenna Ortega exited the project due to her commitments to Netflix’s Wednesday, while Melissa Barrera was dismissed following controversial social media comments.

Despite these challenges, the franchise continues to thrive. Scream VI set box office records in 2023, becoming the highest-grossing domestic entry in the series with over $108 million. Collectively, the Scream films have earned more than $900 million worldwide.

Joining Cox in the cast are Mason Gooding, returning as Chad Meeks-Martin, and Isabel May, who will portray the daughter of Sidney Prescott, Neve Campbell’s original character. Scream 7 is slated for release on February 27, 2026, promising to continue the legacy of one of horror’s most beloved franchises.
