JCP seeks public input on judges' rules
The Judicial Commission of Pakistan (JCP) has invited public feedback on proposed rules of judges' appointment by December 21.
According to JCP Secretary Niaz Muhammad Khan, Rules Committee Chairperson Justice Jamal Khan Mandokhail has expressed gratitude to all the members of the committee for their efforts in drafting the proposed rules of procedure for the appointment of judges to the Supreme Court, the Federal Shariat Court and the high courts.
The proposed Judicial Commission of Pakistan (Appointment of Judges) Rules, 2024 have been posted on the official website of the Supreme Court for public comments and feedback.
As per judges appointment rules drafted by JCP, the Leader of the House, the Leader of the Opposition and the Speaker of the National Assembly, are expected to ensure that members nominated to the commission have legal background when making nominations under Article 175A(2)(vii) and (viii) of the Constitution.
A secretariat of JCP, housed in the Supreme Court Building at Islamabad or such other place shall maintain records of all proceedings of the commission. The secretariat shall maintain a complete record of all anticipated and actual vacancies of judges in the Supreme Court, the high courts and the Federal Shariat Court.
The merit of a person for appointment as a judge shall be determined in accordance with the criteria set out in the oath of office of a judge under the Constitution, which requires the ability to do right to all manner of people, according to law, without fear or favour, affection or ill-will.
