Hannah Kobayashi returns to U.S., shares that her focus is on healing after weeks-long disappearance

Hannah Kobayashi, the 30-year-old Hawaii woman who went missing in November, has spoken publicly for the first time since her return to the United States.

Kobayashi, who was the subject of a nationwide search after disappearing into Mexico, confirmed her safe return in a statement shared by her aunt, Larie Pidgeon.

"At daybreak on December 15th, I crossed the border back into the United States," Kobayashi said. “My focus now is on my healing, my peace and my creativity.” She also thanked her family and those who supported her during this time, asking for privacy as she processes the experience.

The Los Angeles Police Department confirmed her return, with Lt. Doug Oldfield stating that Kobayashi had presented herself to Customs and Border Protection on Dec. 15. Authorities reported she was in good health and not in distress.

Kobayashi revealed she was unaware of the intense media coverage surrounding her disappearance and requested understanding as she navigates the aftermath.

Her family previously announced she had been "found safe" on Dec. 11 after weeks of uncertainty. The search began when Kobayashi failed to board a connecting flight to New York City on Nov. 9 and sent concerning messages to her family.

Police later classified her disappearance as "voluntary" after learning she crossed the U.S.-Mexico border on Nov. 12.

The Kobayashi family expressed gratitude for public support, acknowledging the ordeal’s emotional toll.
