SNL mocks UnitedHealthcare murder suspect Luigi Mangione with Nancy Grace cold open
Saturday Night Live (SNL) turned its comedic lens to Luigi Mangione, the accused UnitedHealthcare CEO shooter, during its Dec. 14 episode. Opening with a satirical take on Crime Stories with Nancy Grace, cast member Sarah Sherman portrayed Nancy Grace, diving into the unusual online obsession with Mangione, 26, who has been controversially labeled a "sex symbol."
“Our top story tonight, the masked CEO shooter has been unmasked and guess what? It’s game over Luigi,” Sherman quipped, introducing the segment with a nod to Super Mario Bros.
Sherman’s Grace lamented how social media glorified Mangione, despite his alleged crimes. “Y’all psychos made him a sex symbol,” she said, comparing his appearance to “Dave Franco with Eugene Levy eyebrows.”
Mangione, accused of killing UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson outside a Manhattan hotel on Dec. 4, was apprehended in Pennsylvania on Dec. 9 after a multi-day manhunt.
The SNL skit highlighted public reactions, including humorous references to Mangione’s alleged “BDE” and his label as a “twunk.” Kenan Thompson also joined the scene as a McDonald’s patron who witnessed Mangione’s arrest, joking about his own fast-food lifestyle and healthcare challenges.
The episode didn’t shy away from Mangione’s infamy. During Weekend Update, Colin Jost and Chris Rock shared additional jokes about Mangione’s Netflix-worthy story and his “hypocrisy” for frequenting Starbucks and McDonald’s while railing against corporate America.
The skit concluded with Sherman’s Grace declaring, “Live from New York, it’s Saturday Night.”
