Luigi Mangione hires top New York lawyer as he faces second-degree murder charge
Luigi Mangione has enlisted prominent New York attorney Karen Friedman Agnifilo to represent him as he faces a second-degree murder charge in connection to the death of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson. Agnifilo, who previously served as chief assistant district attorney in the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office, brings over seven years of experience to the case. Known for her deep knowledge of New York's criminal justice system, Agnifilo is expected to mount a robust defense for Mangione.
Thompson was fatally shot at a Hilton Hotel in Midtown Manhattan on December 4. Mangione was arrested in Pennsylvania and is facing additional charges, including gun possession and forging documents. Authorities have gathered new evidence, including matching fingerprints and a 3D-printed gun, which reportedly aligns with shell casings found at the crime scene.
Mangione remains in Pennsylvania, fighting extradition to New York, where his case is now gaining attention. A hearing is scheduled for next week regarding his potential waiver of extradition. In the meantime, Mangione's defense attorney in Pennsylvania has declined to comment on whether his prominent Baltimore family is covering the legal costs.
Legal experts believe that Agnifilo's expertise in state court could play a significant role in the ongoing case. Meanwhile, prosecutors are preparing to secure Mangione's extradition to New York for further proceedings.
