The family of Hannah Kobayashi is offering refunds to those who contributed nearly $50,000 to fund the search for the missing photographer, now found safe in Mexico.
However, there’s a condition — refund requests must be submitted within a few days.
“We are turning donations off, and any donor who would like a refund can submit a claim by December 18th, and it will be honored,” her sister, Sydni Kobayashi, wrote in a Thursday update on the fundraiser.
The fundraiser raised just over $47,000 to aid in locating the 30-year-old photographer. Separately, a GoFundMe was created to cover funeral expenses for her father, Ryan Kobayashi, 58, who died by apparent suicide six days after she went missing.
“We are incredibly relieved and grateful that Hannah has been found safe. This past month has been an unimaginable ordeal for our family. We want to express our heartfelt thanks to everyone who supported us during this difficult time. Your kindness and concern have meant the world to us,” the update read.
Hannah Kobayashi was reported missing in Los Angeles on November 11 after failing to board a connecting flight to New York City.
Before disappearing, the Hawaii native sent a series of strange text messages to friends and family, referencing a “spiritual awakening” and feeling “tricked.”
She was also seen with an unidentified man hours before her last known sighting, leading her family to suspect she had been kidnapped or trafficked.
It was later discovered that she had traveled to Mexico voluntarily, sparking an FBI investigation into her potential involvement in a green card marriage scheme with an Argentine national.
According to reports, Hannah Kobayashi had planned to travel to New York City with her green card husband and another couple in a similar arrangement to create evidence for immigration officials that their marriages were legitimate.
