Briana Boston, 42, has been arrested at her home in Lakeland, Florida for allegedly making threatening comments during a phone call to BlueCross BlueShield after her medical insurance claim was denied. Boston’s remark, “Delay, deny, depose. You people are next,” has drawn scrutiny due to its resemblance to phrases tied to a recent high-profile crime.
Lakeland Police reported that Boston’s statement echoed language associated with Luigi Mangione, accused of killing UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson. Mangione allegedly wrote similar phrases on ammunition used in the attack, linking them to critiques of the U.S. healthcare system.
Police arrested Boston at her Lakeland home, where she reportedly told officers that healthcare companies “deserved karma” for their practices. Boston, a mother of three, denied being a danger and stated she owned no firearms.
The phrase “Delay, Deny, Defend” stems from a 2010 book that critiques insurance tactics to limit claim payouts. Despite Boston’s claim of no intent to harm, authorities charged her with making threats of mass violence or terrorism.
BlueCross BlueShield, which serves over 115 million members, has not commented on the incident. Boston remains in custody on $100,000 bail, while the case continues to attract public attention, especially in light of heightened awareness around healthcare disputes.
