Qureshi, Yasmeen indicted in May 9 riots case
The Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC) in Lahore formally indicted Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leaders Shah Mahmood Qureshi, Dr. Yasmin Rashid, Ejaz Chaudhry, and Mian Mehmoodur Rashid in the Shadman police station arson and rioting case.
The indictment was read out to the accused during a hearing presided over by ATC Judge Manzar Ali Gul at the Kot Lakhpat Jail.
The court has summoned witnesses for the next hearing and adjourned the case until December 19.
The court has also postponed proceedings in other cases, including the attack on the Military Tower, until December 23.
The Shadman police had filed a case against PTI leaders and activists for attacking and setting fire to the police station during the May 9 riots.
Previously the Joint Investigation Team (JIT) report in the cases related to the violent events of 9 May, was presented in the Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC) revealing that Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leadership and several party leaders have been found guilty of inciting violence.
The report, which was completed after thorough investigation, states that the leadership of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) instigated the public on 9 May, leading to the violent events.
Imran declares Dec 15 'Martyrs Day'
The PTI founder Imran Khan has directed his party to observe December 15 as "Martyrs Day" to honour the sacrifices of party workers who lost their lives during the May 9 and November 26 protests.
The jailed PTI founder also called for a judicial inquiry into the May 9 and November 26 incidents, claiming that PTI workers were killed by law enforcement agencies.
Following a meeting with her brother in jail on Tuesday, Aleema Khanum, Imran's sister, addressed the media, revealing that Imran initially demanded an inquiry into the events of May 9 but he has now included November 26 in his call for investigations.
She said the PTI founder proposed forming a joint investigation commission comprising the three most senior judges of the Supreme Court to conduct an impartial probe into the deaths of party workers during peaceful demonstrations.
