Punjab allocates Rs1.5b for kinnow orchards
A consultative session chaired by Punjab Agriculture Secretary Iftikhar Ali Sahoo was convened in Lahore to explore strategies for enhancing both the yield and quality of kinnow production, according to a statement issued on Tuesday.
The meeting brought together a diverse group of agricultural experts, kinnow orchard owners, exporters, and other stakeholders to develop actionable recommendations aimed at revitalising the sector.
During the session, Sahoo stated that comprehensive measures will be taken to ensure profitable opportunities for kinnow orchard owners while also adhering to global standards.
In a major announcement, he disclosed plans to establish a 'Centre of Excellence' in Sargodha dedicated to advanced kinnow research.
A substantial allocation of Rs1.5 billion has been earmarked for the revival of kinnow orchards, which currently span over 317,000 acres across Punjab.
The secretary shared that actionable recommendations are being developed based on input from agricultural experts, exporters, and industry stakeholders.
These measures include the establishment of specialised Citrus Research Centres in Toba Tek Singh and Layyah, a move that aims to address region-specific challenges in kinnow cultivation and further enhance research capabilities.
Highlighting the technological advancements planned for the sector, Sahoo announced that new kinnow orchards will be cultivated using a High-Efficiency Irrigation System, and nurseries will be established to provide farmers with access to authentic and high-quality plant varieties.
Efforts to reduce post-harvest losses through modern technology and to align kinnow processing and packaging with international standards have also been finalised.
