The Kanlaon Volcano, located in the central Philippines, erupted on Monday, sending an eruption column soaring up to 3,000 metres into the sky, according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs).
In response to the eruption, Phivolcs raised the volcano’s alert level to its third highest, indicating that magmatic activity has begun, with the potential for further explosive eruptions.
Local authorities in the surrounding areas of Negros Occidental and Negros Oriental, where the volcano is situated, have been advised to evacuate people living near the volcano.
Phivolcs has also warned that additional evacuations may be necessary if the situation worsens.
Kanlaon is one of the Philippines’ active volcanoes, situated in the Pacific "Ring of Fire," an area prone to frequent volcanic eruptions and earthquakes.
