McLaren has achieved its first Formula 1 Constructors’ Championship since 1998, marking a historic milestone for the team. Drivers Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri played pivotal roles in securing the title during the final race of the 2024 season at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, capping off an exceptional year for the team.

Norris, 25, secured pole position in qualifying and went on to win the race, further solidifying his standout season. His teammate, 23-year-old Piastri, finished 10th after an early incident involving Red Bull’s Max Verstappen. Despite Ferrari’s determined push, with Carlos Sainz Jr. and Charles Leclerc securing second and third place in Abu Dhabi, McLaren’s consistent performance throughout the season maintained their lead, earning them the championship. Ferrari’s grid penalties and challenges further cemented McLaren’s advantage.

McLaren’s resurgence has been years in the making under CEO Zak Brown and team principal Andrea Stella. Norris joined the team in 2019, while Piastri made his F1 debut in 2023. This season proved transformative, with both drivers earning their first F1 wins—Norris at the Miami Grand Prix and Piastri at the Hungarian Grand Prix. The duo delivered a combined 20 podium finishes, with Norris securing four wins and Piastri two.

The Constructors’ title brings not only prestige but also a significant financial reward, estimated at $140 million. This funding is expected to strengthen McLaren’s position as a top contender in upcoming seasons.

Max Verstappen, who earlier secured his fourth World Drivers’ Championship, also marked a successful season for Red Bull. However, McLaren’s historic achievement underscores their determination to reclaim their place among F1’s elite, setting the stage for fierce competition in the years ahead.
