KARACHI:

Amerigo Vespucci, the oldest active military vessel in the Italian Navy, arrived at Karachi port for a three-day goodwill visit.

Built in 1931, the tall ship is celebrated worldwide as "the most beautiful ship in the world". Its 24 canvas sails, spanning a total surface of 2,600 square meters, exemplify its grandeur.

The ship's engine room, brass deck instruments, and rosewood-crafted stairs reflect a harmonious blend of traditional craftsmanship and timeless elegance. Equipped with both wind-powered sails and diesel engines, the Amerigo Vespucci served as a training and diplomatic vessel during its voyages.

The Italian ship, with its towering masts and intricate rigging, was warmly received upon docking in Karachi.

Named after the famed Italian explorer, the vessel is on a global goodwill tour spanning 28 countries from 2023 to 2025, with Pakistan as one of its stops.

During the visit, officers and crew from the ship will engage with counterparts from the Pakistan Navy.

The Amerigo Vespucci retains its original navigational instruments and compass, which remain fully operational.

Its polished brass components and rosewood stairs still gleam, showcasing meticulous preservation. While originally fully sail-powered, the ship now features four diesel engines, enabling a speed of 8 nautical miles per hour (16 km/h).

Italian Ambassador and Consul General highlighted the significance of the visit, describing it as a symbol of goodwill and cultural exchange.

They noted that Pakistan and Italy share strong bilateral ties, with Italy hosting the largest Pakistani community in Europe. The ship's visit aims to bolster these relations further, with a trade commissioner's office recently established in Islamabad to enhance economic collaboration.

Captain Joseph, the commanding officer of the Amerigo Vespucci, described the vessel as a guardian of Italian culture and traditions. He pointed out its historical significance and elegance, calling it one of the most beautiful ships in the world.

This marks the Amerigo Vespucci's first visit to Pakistan, though it is Captain Joseph's sixth visit to Karachi, who expressed deep appreciation for the city's vibrant culture and rich cuisine.
