LHC questions market timings amid smog crisis
Justice Shahid Karim of the Lahore High Court (LHC) expressed strong displeasure over the recent change in market closing timings to 10:00pm, suggesting the decision appeared influenced by pressure groups and mafias.
Hearing a series of petitions on smog control, pollution reduction, and groundwater conservation, Justice Karim directed the Lahore Development Authority (LDA) to draft a comprehensive policy to regulate street vendors operating on major roads.
As the hearing commenced, Justice Karim inquired about the basis for altering market timings without presenting a report to the court. He noted, "The influence of pressure groups and mafias seems evident. Officials must understand the severity of the smog issue."
Advocate General Punjab (AGP) Khalid Ishaq responded, stating that he would seek clarification on the grounds for the timing change. Addressing the issue of street vendors causing traffic disruptions, Justice Karim remarked that vendors selling vegetables, fruits, and food items should be allocated specific areas to operate. LDA's counsel informed the court that efforts were underway to address the issue.
