RAWALPINDI:

The Punjab government has decided to restore the Local Government Act 2013 with minor amendments. This Act was passed during the tenure of Shehbaz Sharif as the Punjab Chief Minister.

Under this Act, all the districts of nine divisions in Punjab will have Metropolitan Corporations (MCs) and District Councils (DCs) will be abolished in these districts. These cities include Rawalpindi, Gujranwala, Faisalabad, Sargodha, Lahore, Multan, Sahiwal, Bahawalpur, Bahawalnagar and Dera Ghazi Khan.

Apart from these, the legislation will also create a metropolitan in Sialkot or Gujarat. The MC status of the new Murree district will be restored. The Tehsil Council will be replaced by the Town Committee. In the new system, the district councils will be reduced to 35. A union council (UC) will consist of a population of 20,000 to 25,000 persons.

The new constituencies on this basis after the passage of the Act will increase the number of UCs in Rawalpindi and the number of UCs in Metropolitan Corporation Rawalpindi will increase from 46 to 98.

In the new legislation, it has been decided to repeal the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf-era Local Government Act 2022.
