Milaf Cola: World's first date-based soft drink launched by Saudi Arabia

Beverage claims to contain no added sugar, offering a healthier alternative that doesn't compromise on taste

Saudi Arabia has introduced a new cola made from dates, replacing traditional sweeteners like corn syrup and cane sugar. The drink, named Milaf Cola, was unveiled at the Riyadh Date Festival by the CEO of Thurath Al-Madina, Bander Al-Qahtani, and the Saudi agriculture minister, Abdulrahman Al-Fadley.

Milaf Cola is crafted using premium dates, a staple fruit in the Middle East known for its rich nutritional profile. Dates are packed with fibre, antioxidants, and essential minerals such as magnesium and potassium, making them a healthful base for the beverage.

Unlike conventional sodas, Milaf Cola claims to contain no added sugar, offering a healthier alternative that doesn't compromise on taste.

"The cola is an innovative product that brings together the health benefits of dates with the refreshing taste of a classic cola. It's a healthier option for soda drinkers," said Al-Qahtani.

The launch of Milaf Cola is part of a broader initiative in Saudi Arabia to promote locally sourced, sustainable products in line with the country's Vision 2030—a plan aimed at diversifying the economy and encouraging social and cultural development.

Thurath Al-Madina, a subsidiary of the Saudi Public Investment Fund, stated that Milaf Cola meets international food safety standards and is environmentally sustainable, thanks to its use of locally sourced dates.

The company has plans to expand the beverage into regional and international markets, aiming to change global perceptions of dates as more than just a traditional snack.

"Milaf Cola is just the beginning. We are working on a variety of products that will revolutionise how dates are consumed globally," a company spokesperson said.
