Omar Ayub, among five PTI leaders, arrested after Imran Khan's indictment
Following Imran Khan's indictment in May 9 and GHQ attack cases, police have arrested Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader and Opposition Leader in the National Assembly, Omar Ayub, outside Adiala Jail on Thursday, Express News reported.
He was taken into custody following a court decision, while former law minister Raja Basharat was also arrested as he exited the jail. Other PTI leaders, including Ahmed Chatha, were also detained and transferred to the police station at Adiala whereas PTI worker Azeem was also arrested.
The Rawalpindi police have arrested Omar Ayub and four other PTI leaders in connection with cases related to violent protests following a 'final' call for action. The court has adjourned the case until December 10, asking the prosecution to present evidence.
The PTI condemned the arrests in a post on X, calling the state’s actions a sign of an “undeclared martial law in Pakistan.” The party further stated, “Such acts reflect desperation, not strength!”
Meanwhile, an Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC) has directed the authorities to present five PTI leaders, who were arrested outside Adiala Jail, before the court. The order was issued following a petition filed by the lawyers of the detained leaders.
The PTI leaders were arrested outside Adiala Jail, Rawalpindi, and their lawyers filed a petition in the ATC seeking their presentation before the court.
Judge Amjad Ali Shah accepted the petition and ordered that the five detained leaders be brought before the court.
Moreover, former National Assembly speaker Asad Qaiser has announced his intention to file a contempt of court petition in response to the arrest of Ayub in connection with the GHQ attack case.
According to Express News, Qaiser criticised the arrest of Ayub as "illegal" and stated that he would file a petition for contempt of court at the Peshawar High Court tomorrow.
